The first trade show held at McCormick Place on Tuesday since the start of the pandemic was hosted by the Advertising Specialty Institute. And it was a better turnout than the host had ever imagined.

CBS2’s Marisa Avedra introduced us to the ASI Show Chicago on Wednesday night.

“I’m very surprised – very, very surprised,” said Rich Carolo.

Four months ago, Carrollo didn’t think it could be mixed up on the convention hall floor at this point. He was glad it turned out to be wrong.

“Oh, it’s very exciting, which means we’ve been waiting for this for a year and a half,” he said.

Carollo is the owner of Lion Circle, a special printing company based on the South Side.

“Folding fans, headbands, lots of fridge magnets, buttons, it’s all made of paper,” he said.

And a year after he didn’t need a lot of loot bags, he was one of hundreds of promotional companies and was McCormick Place’s first salon since the pandemic.

“And the people here want to do business. This is the best part of the business, ”Carolo said.

During ASI’s last show in 2019 before the pandemic, 4,000 people walked on the ground. When the company decided to host the show in March, it wasn’t sure what the attendance would be in July, but it only fell 20%.

“We thought we would lose about 50%, so I think a 20% or 30% cut would be a very successful time,” Andrews says. .. “

Plus, all attendees spend money at Chicago hotels and restaurants. It is the return to business travel that the city center must recover.

And surely, these travelers seem happy to come back.

“And it’s very good. You can touch, smell and smell, ”Carolo said. “To be honest with you, I’m always happy to be back.”
